Analyzing covers
After completing my second magazine cover (travel) I need I wanted to steer away from that topic of magazine. I want to focus more on Analyzing and getting more of a creative view and aspect on sports covers because thats what I will be doing for my Final Project.
A cover for a magazine can make or break it. It's the first impression the reader will get. The cover must attract the reader, something needs to look appealing, it needs to catch their eye. Noticeable images, appealing fonts, big puffs that scream to the viewer that need to hook them. These are all things a good magazine should include.
Research: All covers will be shown will showcase a example of how a cover can make someone feel like it needs to be picked up. Cover Images that are like eye-candy, something that grabs the reader, rather the the reader grabbing it. The covers should help the reader get a grasp and tone of how the magazine articles will be. Big key words and intricate yet simple fonts can be the deciding factor if the readers attention will be grabbed. So many things go into the magazine but the cover is what makes it.
Sports Illustrated: Miracle on Ice: Iconic. In every sense of the word. The Sports Illustrated Miracle on Ice cover is a striking and unforgettable piece of sports history that immediately captures the reader’s attention. Featuring a raw, emotional image of the U.S. hockey team celebrating their stunning 1980 Olympic victory over the Soviet Union, the cover stands out by letting the moment speak for itself without any captions or headlines. This bold design choice makes it unique, drawing the viewer into the joy and disbelief of the underdog victory. The simplicity and power of the image make it one of the most iconic magazine covers of all time.

U.S. Women’s Soccer cover is a bold and electrifying celebration of victory that instantly grabs the reader’s attention. The cover’s powerful simplicity featuring a triumphant Brandi Chastain, member of the U.S. Women’s National Team with arms raised in joy, accompanied by the emphatic “YES!” headline captures the excitement and significance of their World Cup triumph. The striking imagery and minimal text make the moment feel larger than life, allowing the emotion and historic achievement to shine through, making it an unforgettable and attention-grabbing cover.
Sports Illustrated: The Chosen One (Lebron James): The Sports Illustrated The Chosen One cover featuring LeBron James is a legendary and attention-grabbing moment in sports media. Showcasing a young LeBron in his St. Vincent-St. Mary high school jersey, the cover boldly spotlights him as basketball’s next superstar with the dramatic headline, The Chosen One. The lighting and composition give him an almost mythical presence, immediately drawing the reader in and reinforcing the weight of expectations placed on him. It almost feeling like Lebron is reaching for the reader.
