How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?
My magazine cover, The Swamp Report, uses several traditional conventions of sports magazine covers, such as bold typography, action-packed imagery, and strong color contrast to grab attention. However, it challenges the usual focus on professional teams by highlighting a college atmosphere—specifically the University of Florida's Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, aka "The Swamp." It celebrates the culture and spirit of college sports, representing student-athletes and passionate fans as major contributors to the sports world. Socially, it uplifts the often-underrepresented impact of collegiate sports in media by questioning whether even professional teams can match the intensity of The Swamp. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?
The cover engages its audience—primarily college students, alumni, and sports fans—by appealing to school pride and nostalgia with headlines like “Best Atmosphere in Sports?” and “Top 10 Most Iconic Sports Moments in Gator History.” It ties into the timely excitement of March Madness, drawing in viewers who follow both basketball and football. If distributed as a real media text, it would be available both digitally and in print, shared across university platforms, alumni newsletters, sports blogs, and through social media to target the Gator Nation community and college sports enthusiasts. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
Throughout this project, my skills in layout design, text hierarchy, and image composition improved significantly. I learned how to make text stand out against a busy background and how to maintain visual balance while still conveying energy and motion. Experimenting with font pairings and color schemes also taught me how to evoke a school’s identity through visuals. I became more confident using design principles like alignment, contrast, and spacing. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
To create The Swamp Report, I used Canva and Photoshop to design the layout and enhance the stadium image. I used my phone camera to capture stadium photos and a laptop to edit and finalize the file. I also researched cover design techniques and sports journalism trends online to inspire my creative choices. Combining hardware, software, and online tools helped me produce a polished, professional-looking magazine cover.
